It was in the early summer of 2003. We were young and bored and must have arrived wherever we had been heading because R. had found a parking spot, turned the key and suddenly, this beautiful sound was over and out. Karen O’s voice repeating Wait, they don’t love you like I love you had just touched me and made me feel understood, and I would never have pulled the key, trading this feeling, killing the song, for silence and I guess that’s what Wait, they don’t love you like I love you is all about.

The sound of now

I had already felt like I could stretch out to reach the sky with my fingertips when I discovered YYY’s new material on YT last year in the winter of 2022. “Burning” and “Spitting off the Edge of The World” completed the soundtrack of my high. These seemed special, fresh, forte, and the clips underlined that this was exceptional art.

Predator had just stocked O-PCE (and also a new orange-coloured DCK). After all these years of disappointing what had been sold for O-PCE, this very O-PCE batch finally felt close to the original O-PCE from Spain, which I remember as one of the most fascinating substances.

I would not remember the year, but I will never forget how it made me feel like the world had frozen and became an organic pattern puzzle in which air was not invisible but part of the scene. I was stunned; it was beautiful, and I remember a feeling I named “fruity glitter”. I am sorry, I lack the vocabulary to describe what I experienced, but it was impressive.

The vendor unfortunately got shut down and for many months, TRC would ask to find a supplier of O-PCE (50 Euros reward for any helpful tip) and later would offer O-PCE, but it had never been the same.

Dissociative substances

It would be irresponsible to recommend O-PCE because O-PCE is a dissociative substance like Ketamine.

Dissociation means that your perception is disconnected from reality and is a phenomenon that is sometimes described in connection with severe trauma. Victims who have been abused would be unable to bear this torture and either pass out or escape their minds into an alternative reality where nobody gets hurt.

A dissociative substance could make you lose touch with reality and send you to a dream while still awake and moving. Dreamland and reality could have stairs, doors, and windows but a completely different layout. If you dreamed you walked on water while blindly heading towards the staircase, an accident seems possible, if not inevitable.

It turns out that many would do high dosages and go to bed, where they experience colourful dreams in which they meet and interact with fantasy characters. That seems like a clever move because if you are asleep or at least lying in bed, you won’t fall down any stairs. This is called “dream potentiation” or “lucid dreaming”.

Others would do tiny dosages and experience euphoria and “immersion identifaction ”. Immersion means you watch a movie and cannot help but feel you were not on some drug but in that movie.

That also works with music. I tried visualizing this with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs clips and the OPCE bag. I felt closer to the music and the video clips, and the bag of O-PCE becoming part of the video is my approach to visualize how I felt connected to whatever happens on the screen.

Beware!

I could never figure out how to control dissociative substances. Also, there are many different ones, and I would not trust any vendor to send you what you ordered. These substances could make you forget the concept of time, which means you could not read a watch or understand a calendar, rendering you helpless; An artist from Spain even shared that he would enjoy seeing himself from the outside, usually lying on the floor on ARTE Tracks once. Dissociative substances may also mess with your memory!

Predator’s O-PCE is currently the best version I would be aware of. I actually wonder that it is still available. Luckily, you cannot order more than 2 grams at once. It is a whitish powder. I also tried TRC’s transparent crystals, which I found rather disappointing.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are Nick Zinner (guitar and keyboard), Karen O (singer) and Brian Chase (drums). They released their self-titled debut EP in 2001 on their label, Shifty. You might remember the song “Art Star”,

In 2003, they released their first long-player, “Fever To Tell”, via Interscope Records. It contains Maps and Y Control. The album sold between 750,000 and 1 million copies. Their latest album, “Cool it Down”, with Burning and Spitting off the Edge of the World, appeared in stores in September 2022.
